Runner Blasts State Senate On “Great American Boycott” Endorsement

State Senate Passes Resolution Today Supporting “Great American Boycott”

Today Senator George Runner (R-Antelope Valley) blasted the State Senate for endorsing a resolution for a boycott supporting illegal immigration that will hurt the economy and encourage students to leave school. “It is outrageous that the State Senate has actually supported a resolution endorsing a boycott that will hurt California’s economy,” said Senator George Runner. “This boycott is really a guise by organizers to support amnesty for all illegal immigrants, give illegal immigrants’ drivers licenses, and provide them all of the benefits and services California taxpayers enjoy.” Senate Concurrent Resolution 113 authored by Senator Gloria Romero (D-Los Angeles) states “The Senate of the State of California recognizes that “The Great American Boycott 2006 is to educate people in California and across the United States about the tremendous contribution immigrants make on a daily basis to our society and economy.”  However, supporters of the boycott state the reason is to support full amnesty.  The International Workers of the World supports the boycott and states on its Web site that the “Great American Boycott” is to send the message that, ‘We will settle for nothing less than full amnesty and dignity for the millions of undocumented workers presently in the U.S.’ Runner continued, “This resolution sounds nice and speaks about the contributions of immigrants but it’s not about immigrants, it’s about eliminating our borders and providing full citizenship rights to illegal immigrants.  It is not appropriate for the State Legislature to endorse such a boycott which will just continue to fuel misinformation and divisiveness instead of encouraging Congress to enact real immigration reform which should include shoring up our porous borders.”
SCR 113 passed on a straight partisan vote in the State Senate.
