Hwy 138 improvements made a top priority

ImageState Senator George Runner (R-Antelope Valley) today applauded Will Kempton, director of Caltrans, and the commissioners of the California Transportation Commission for their support of continued improvements to a portion of Highway 138, and for assuring that further funding is probable.

In a letter written in June, Runner requested the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of East Palmdale Blvd and 47th Street, which will improve an existing 90-degree curve that is the cause of many vehicle accidents – some of them fatal.

“SR 138 continues to be one of the most dangerous highways in California, but this project will radically improve the safety of this heavily traveled roadway,” Runner said. “I am thankful that Mr. Kempton has made an appeal to the CTC, and that its members have given assurances of a favorable outcome for funding the project.”

The CTC meets July 25 and 26 to vote on several transportation projects throughout the state, including the augmentation dollars for SR 138, which is a Caltrans State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP).

Earlier this year, the CTC denied funding of the project until an appeal was made that improvements to the stretch of SR 138 are critical.

“I wanted to make sure that our case for the roundabout was heard; I wanted to make certain that the CTC understood how important the improvements are for the safety and transportation needs of Antelope ValleyLos Angeles Basin,” Runner said. “I will be monitoring the progress of CTC’s meeting later this month.” residents and motorists who use the highway to circumvent the
