Senator Sends Letter to County School Superintendent.
Senator George Runner (R-Antelope Valley) is demanding that Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) follow the law and their obligations and investigate their charter school, Academia Semillas del Pueblo. Since LAUSD has seemed to shirk its responsibility, he is urging the Los Angeles County Superintendent to intercede under a new law that grants county superintendents authority to hold charter schools accountable.
"There are many successful charter schools however, unfortunately, there are people who abuse the law. There have been disturbing reports about this charter school including that it receives a portion of its funding from La Raza in addition to the taxpayer funds it receives," said Runner.
Senator Runner authored legislation last year (SB 430), which would ensure that charter schools are held accountable. The purpose of this law was to give authority to the county superintendent to hold charter schools accountable when local school districts fail to do so. Runner continued, "I have written a letter to the Los Angeles County Superintendent urging her to use her authority to investigate these disturbing reports about Academia Semillas del Pueblo. I will also be urging Superintendent Romer of LAUSD to follow the law which requires the school district to hold this school accountable."
Los Angeles County Superintendent Darline Robles has communicated with Senator Runner that she will be using the new law and will begin to follow up with the request.
