Kids will have a safer route to Pinetree, Skyblue Mesa and James Foster elementary schools under a $587,000 grant from Caltrans.

The California Department of Transportation awarded a total of $66 million last week for 139 projects across California in the agency’s “Safe Routes to School” program. The money is distributed to cities and counties to improve specific streets and sidewalks so students in grades K-8 can walk or ride a bicycle to school safely.

In the last fiscal year ending June 30, the city of Santa Clarita performed work to reduce vehicle speeds and increase the visibility of crosswalks at Leona Cox Elementary in the Sulphur Springs Union School District, Rio Vista Elementary in the Saugus Union School District and Old Orchard Elementary in the Newhall School District.

This fiscal year, the new money will go for improvements around another three SCV schools – two in the Saugus district (James Foster and Skyblue Mesa) and one in the Sulphur Springs district (Pinetree).

Specifically, the work entails the installation of sidewalks, crosswalks, bulb-outs and speed feedback signs near Skyblue Mesa along Hardesty Avenue between Ermine Street and Aldbury Street; near Foster along Pamplico Drive between Myrin Court and Fenwall Drive; and near Pinetree at Lotusgarden and Flowerpark Drive.
