About 18 months ago, Robinson Ranch was struggling.

In fact, it was losing more than a million dollars a year.

But owner Steve Kim has a vision.

Kim is turning that vision into Sand Canyon Country Club, with an ambitious two-year plan for a full-service health resort and spa to provide a luxury getaway right here in the Santa Clarita Valley.

He has quite a bit of experience in turning dreams into reality.

The tech entrepreneur-turned-billionaire has created two companies from scratch, both of which resulted in success that’s left Kim with more money than he could spend.

He came to the Santa Clarita Valley with very little means, and his first job was stocking shelves, while he attended night school and earned his engineering degree from Cal State Los Angeles.

Within about 10 years of graduating and his first job in the technology center, he had an idea of his own that he knew would save money. He convinced some of his co-workers to invest, and he put all he had into a company that eventually made him about $10 million when it was sold.

He then started over with another company, earning untold riches when his second startup was sold for nearly $2 billion.

After he tried the nightlife, parties and the mansion in Holmby Hills, he realized he would find true happiness elsewhere — in making others smile and appreciate life the way he was, he said.

And where he found that was at Sand Canyon County Club, and making his guests and visitors go “Wow,” as he is fond of saying.

The plans include changing the course from its current configuration to two course, both more playable, a 9-hole option and an 18-hole course.

Perhaps the most ambitious plan is being laid for a 30-acre parcel of the Sand Canyon Country Club property that used to be a separate course.

There, Kim hopes to build a one-of-a-kind, destination hotel-health resort-spa for the Santa Clarita Valley.

Right now, Kim is working with the city of Santa Clarita to obtain the necessary permitting for the property, and hopes to have the plans completed in about two years time.

In the meantime, he’s doing everything he can to make the Sand Canyon golf course as playable as possible, so players enjoy it more, he said.

In addition to landscaping changes, and making the water traps more player-friendly, the course overhaul will keep the costs down for guests, he said. In the past, he’s heard of players losing as many as 10 balls per outing in the past.

He’s also making sure the prices for the amenities and play stay within the realm of affordable, so people will bring their whole family, he said.

This year, for example, he’s starting a golf summer camp for kids, and spots are available now.
