Headquartered at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, the Search and Rescue Team is composed of Reserve Deputies and civilian volunteers. Ready to serve at a moment’s notice, they perform search and rescue tasks for LA County and other disaster agencies.

The Search and Rescue Team formed in 1957 after the rescue of a boy in Loop Canyon, near the foothills of Sylmar. Since then it has welcomed volunteers from all walk of life, from school teachers to film directors.   Members may undergo a variety of training programs including a six-month course with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy as well as Emergency Medical Technician, Mountain Rescue Association and Underground Rescue certification.

A nonprofit, the Search and Rescue Team has struggled due to budgetary constraints to purchase the specialized equipment and training they need to meet their quality service standards.
