“I heard about it from a friend of mine who is involved in indi.com, as far as getting people to do these types of projects,” Cummings said. “They search for new talent.”
The friend was asking if Cummings could promote the contest on the show, and the pair decided to make their own entry, as well.
The contest is called Follow the Script, and it challenges actors and actresses to perform an independent script offered on the site.
The entry was shot in a day and with two takes, with the actors deciding to use their first take.
The contest has a $500 grand prize for the winner, which is chosen based on online votes. There is a second-place prize of $250, and the third-place prize is $50.
Anyone who’s interested in viewing the contest can vote here at indi.com.
Katz and Cummings have been working in local theater for years, with Cummings and Katz, also known as “T. Katz,” first meeting on the set of the production of “Footloose” for the Canyon Theatre Guild.
“We really didn’t know each other that well until we started working on the “Friday Matinee,” said Cummings, “but we kind of professionally, instantly clicked.”
The pair act out a scene called “Nudie State Beach,” where Cummings is a detective of sorts looking to help Katz’ character serve divorce papers on her husband.
The catch is, her husband is at restricted beach — restricted in the sense that it’s a nude beach.
There’s an obvious chemistry between their characters, and Cummings’ detective role agrees to serve the papers in an effort to get a date with the would-be divorcee.
The script was provided to the actors through the contest, which closed to video submissions Monday afternoon.
“Friday Matinee” is an arts and entertainment show on KHTS that features artists and entertainers from Santa Clarita and beyond.
Podcasts and videos are available on the station’s website and YouTube page, respectively.
