Six members of the City of Santa Clarita’s Newhall Community Center Boxing team recently competed in the 8th annual Desert Showdown Boxing Tournament. The local competitors showcased their skills at the sanctioned USA Boxing event and brought home three championship belts to Santa Clarita.
More than 500 of the nation’s best amateur boxers competed in the prestigious boxing tournament, held in Coachella, Ca from July 13-July 18. Three of the six amateur boxers from the City’s Community Center won Championship Belts for their corresponding weight divisions, including George Perez, Senior Boxing Coach Arthur “Chico” Magana and Mayte Razo, who also won the 2009 Golden Glove Championship earlier this year.
“The City is extremely proud of the Newhall Community Center Boxing program and the team’s continued hard work and dedication,” said Mayor Frank Ferry. “This latest championship competition is another example of the quality programs the City’s Newhall Community Center offers to the local community.”
The six competitors from the City’s Community Center Boxing Team included Osmar Olmos, 15, Mayte Razo, 20, Mike Nolasco, 20, Timothy Williams, 20, Joe Lopez, 39, George Perez, 42 and Senior Boxing Coach Arthur “Chico” Magana, 47.
