Many people feel like they are in a toxic relationship, but they don’t know what to do about it, said Alex Urbina, a Santa Clarita Valley life coach who sat down recently with Bree Bonshay, a local psychotherapist that’s been practicing for over 15 years.

The two experts discussed how to determine if you are in a toxic relationship, and what to do about that relationship.
“You may be creating or co-creating that toxic relationship,” Urbina said.
A toxic relationship can be made up of two people who are co-dependent, explains Urbina. Those people are often looking to fill something they are missing internally with something external.
“It takes a lot of internal work to uncover some of those things you may be searching for,” Bonshay said.
“Recently I’ve been looking into why people keep getting into bad relationships, What’s happening?,” Bonshay said. “Do they just keep picking the wrong people?”
For some people, it seems like they leave one toxic relationship for another one that is just as bad.
“What’s the common denominator in all of these broken relationships?,” asks Urbina, “At some point you have to see that it’s got to be you.”
People need to love themselves enough to do that interpersonal work, Urbina said.
“Some of those people are coming together from a common place of woundedness,” Urbina said. “You may be looking externally looking to fill a void.”
