“This event is a celebration of our local youth’s commitment to physical activity and sports, with an opportunity for families to sample a variety of recreational activities to hopefully peak their interest in a fun way, resulting in more daily movement and healthier lives,“ said Heather Sumagaysay, communication specialist for the city of Santa Clarita.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and admission is free.

There also will be about 20 sports of the more traditional variety offered, including tennis, golf, football, hockey, volleyball, baseball, rock climbing, interactive fitness equipment and trampoline jumping at the event, Sumagaysay said.

The Los Angeles Kings and Lancaster JetHawks also plan to make guest appearances at the YOUth Sports and Healthy Families event.

““Play Every Day” is the theme for the Healthy Families Experience, with back to the basics activities, such as hopscotch, tetherball, jump rope and even hula hoop,” she said. “The city’s goal is to simply encourage outdoor play and get kids moving, which is known to contribute to a healthier life.”

Healthy Families is a new addition to the event this year.

“Healthy Families is presented by Kaiser Permanente, where families will be able to learn about food choices in a fun, interactive way, in a non-intimidating setting offering practical information,” Sumagaysay said. “The goal is to educate in a fun environment and encourage families to balance special “treats” with healthy food options and sensible portions.”

Whole Foods, Kaiser Permanente, the Lancaster JetHawks, the Los Angeles Kings, USTA Southern California, Valley Trails Summer Camp, Vista Valencia, My Gym, Body Art Celebrations and Kidz Love Soccer are sponsors of the event.

“Additionally, families will be able to Explore the Store, (an exhibition) sponsored by Whole Foods, which includes choosing the colors and flavors of fresh fruit and veggies, and then Create their Plate!, with a healthy snacks,” she said.

Make sure to bring sunscreen, a swimsuit, a towel, water, activewear and lawn chairs.

“The city hosts this event to celebrate and promote physical activity in a fun way while encouraging youth to explore and discover sports, and possibly their talents, in a non-intimidating way,” said Sumagaysay. “We hope to pique people’s interest in new areas and help them become more active.”
