Santa Clarita Officials Announce Phase Four At Central Park Ribbon Cutting

City of Santa Clarita officials among several other community members met Monday at Central Park for the Phase Three of the Central Park Master Plan ribbon cutting ceremony.

“We just have the perfect place,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “This has just been an amazing road. This is part of making you physically and mentally healthy.”

The new area includes two new, full-size, lighted, multi-use sports fields on 11 acres, 170 new parking stalls, lighted walkways connecting to existing park facilities, and improved running path, irrigation, landscaping and drinking fountains, officials said.

“We are thankful for the fitness equipment which was donated by Eagle Scout Drake Hougo,” Weste said. “That’s a great addition to our park.”

Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean, Councilmembers Dante Acosta, TimBen Boydston and Bob Kellar as well as members of the Castaic Lake Water Agency Board of Directors, local dignitaries and community members attended the ceremony.

The project was completed on time and under budget, Weste said.

The project cost the city of Santa Clarita $2.4 million, said Christina McGoldrick of the Communications Division of the city of Santa Clarita.

Castaic Lake Water Agency officials purchased the site in 1986. The Chesebro family farmed the land when it was still farmland with watermelons, corn, pumpkins and squash.

“We are so fortunate to be a part of a very active and engaged community.” said Bill Cooper, Vice President of the Castaic Lake Water Agency Board of Directors. “Over the years, Central Park has grown with the city, along with the population.”

Events held at the park include Relay for Life, Concerts at the Park and Earth Arbor Day among several sport events.

“This isn’t the last phase but it’s moving along,” Cooper said. “This is beautiful.”

The fencing surrounding the two new sports fields will be removed on Saturday, Aug. 30, according to a press release.

“I am very excited to get this phase of the park done. This is a 130 acre site.” Rick Gould, director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services. “Being able to get it close to the final completion has really been a dream for this community.

“For Phase Four, we’re beginning the design process. It will complete the park in terms of the developed site,” Gould said. “It will be some type of tennis complex, we aren’t sure what it will look like. We also hope to lighten the dog park.”
