At around 1 p.m. volunteers were handing out flyers and sharing information while the West Ranch cheerleaders performed near the fountain outside the mall entrance. The event took place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.
Children painted a sign for survivors and DJ Greg played music for mall goers and attendees of the event.
The kickoff was intended as a precursor to the Santa Clarita Valley Relay For Life event set for May 17 to 18th.
Betsy Keesler, Santa Clarita Valley Relay For Life co-chair, said the kickoff was a way to spread information about the relay in an entertaining way.
“We have a lot going on and are giving out good information,” Keesler said. “We have kids painting a canvas for our survivors and a tap artist who will be donating his completed work to the Relay For Life.”
Proceeds from events leading up to the Relay for Life, as well as from the big event in May, are expected to go to the American Cancer Society to promote their attempts to prevent cancer, provide treatment for cancer patients and research cures.
