Santa Clarita Scores High On Fitness Test

Santa Clarita students are above the state average when it
comes to physical fitness.

The State Superintendent of Public Instruction has released the annual California
Physical Fitness test results, and almost all of the districts in Santa Clarita are
above the state averages.

The test is designed to monitor the fitness levels of children in grades five, seven
and nine, with children tested in six major fitness areas including aerobic capacity
upper body strength, and flexibility.

“Academics and fitness go hand and hand,” said bodybuilder Jake Steinfeld, chair of
the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness.  “When children are physically active ad
eating well, their confidence, focus, and self-esteem improve and their academic
scores do too.”

California developed a healthy fitness zone, which is a standard for what they feel
students should be able to achieve.
The state average for California students in the fifth grade who were in the healthy
fitness zone for all six categories is 28.5 percent, but in Santa Clarita both
Newhall and Saugus Union school districts were above the 40 percent mark.

Sulphur Springs School district also beat the state average with 32.3 percent but
Castaic Elementary missed the mark by more than 7 percent with just 21.3 percent of
students passing in all categories.

“We outscore most of the state in all six categories,” said Dave LeBarron Director
of Curriculum for the Hart District.  “The percentage of students in the Healthy
Fitness Zone has increased and it’s a strong attribute to the work our PE department
has put in."

The Hart district was above state average, with Ninth grade students scoring the
best of all students in the valley with 41.9 percent passing in all six categories.
This is compared to the state percentage of only 35.6.

The goal of the test is to teach kids about physical activity and fitness to promote
a lifetime of physical activity.  For more information on how local schools did go
