Three softball players from College of Canyons will continue their careers in the NCAA.
Outfielder Melissa Herndon is heading to the University of Albany in New York. Pitcher Ashley Imperial is going to Morehead State University in Kentucky. Outfielder Whitney Bruce will play at the New York Institute of Technology.
Herndon was a two-time All Western State Conference selection. She earned All-American and All-State honors last year. The West Ranch High graduate hit .446 with 13 doubles and five home runs in her sophomore season at COC.
Imperial was a two-time Western State Conference Pitcher of the Year. She compiled an 18-7 record and 2.55 ERA in her sophomore season at COC. The Saugus High grad tossed six shutouts and 18 complete games.
Bruce hit .397 in her sophomore season at COC. The Saugus High graduate had eight doubles and three home runs for COC last season.
In auto racing, Bryan Herta Autosport is making a driver change on its Firestone Indy Lights team. Joel Miller is taking over for Stefan Wilson in the team’s No. 28 car for this weekend’s race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma.
Wilson has started the first nine race of the Indy Lights season for Bryan Herta’s Indy Lights team. Herta said Wilson lacks the funding to race at Sonoma, but the team is working to have Wilson return to racing before the season is over.
Miller, a 22-year-old from Hesperia, has one career Indy Lights start. He was 11th for Andersen Racing in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in April.
The Carneros 100 Indy Lights race is scheduled for Sunday at noon in Sonoma.
In football, former USC standout running back Stafon Johnson was waived by the Tennessee Titans. Johnson had his neck crushed in a weightlifting accident and it was thought he would never play football again.
Titans coach Jeff Fisher told the Associated Press that when Johnson clears waivers he will be put on the team’s injured reserve list. Johnson dislocated his ankle and broke his leg in the Titans’ 20-18 preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday night.
The Dodgers exploded for five runs in the fifth inning in a 6-0 win over the visiting Colorado Rockies.
Scott Podsednik and James Loney each had two-run doubles in the inning.
Clayton Kershaw pitched seven shutout innings and struck out six. He won his 11th game of the season.
Despite the win, the Dodgers still trail the San Diego Padres by 11 games in the National League West standings. On the bright side, the Dodgers are only a game behind the Rockies for third place in the National League West.
