Abbey Weitzeil Starts At Junior National Swimming Championships

Saugus High junior Abbey Weitzeil posted the fourth fastest time in qualifying in the 100-meter freestyle at the Speedo Junior National Swimming Championships in Irvine.

Weitzeil’s time in the 100 freestyle was 56.32 seconds. She is swimming for the Canyons Aquatics Club and will also compete on the 4×100 freestyle relay team with Liza Kuznetsova, Tamara Santoyo and Mik Ranslem.

She entered the meet as the No. 1 ranked swimmer in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. She will also compete in the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle.

In volleyball, Kyle Ensing, a junior at Valencia High School, won a gold medal with the USA A1 Select Red team in the boys international youth division at the United States High Performance championships in Florida.

Ensing’s team defeated the United States youth A1 White team, 3-2, in the championship match. The Red team won seven matches in a row after losing to Puerto Rico in its opening match.

West Ranch’s Haley Lind played on the USA Youth A1 White team at the tournament. Her team went 4-4 and finished in ninth place in the women’s international division.

In baseball, the Dodgers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-1, and saw their 15-game road winning streak snapped.

The Dodgers set a franchise record for wins on the road.

The Dodgers and Cardinals are back in action tonight. Ricky Nolasco is on the hill for the Dodgers against Shelby Miller for the Cardinals.
