Antelope Valley Ice Hockey Team Wins Ice Station Valencia High School Championship

The Antelope Valley ice hockey team won the Ice Station Valencia high school championship for the second year in a row.

Antelope Valley beat Valencia, 4-3, in the championship game. Liam Stirtzinger had a hat trick and assisted on Antelope Valley’ first goal.

Valencia took a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Antelope Valley tied the score on a goal by Kyle Ljunggren.

The two teams traded goals in the second period before Stirtzinger’s second goal of the game gave Antelope Valley a 3-2 lead.

His third goal of the game in the third period proved to be the deciding goal.

In college baseball, Steve Karkenny and AJ Work from The Master’s College were selected as NAIA All Americans in baseball.

Karkenny was selected to the NAIA first team. He hit .348 with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs. Karkenny led the Golden State Athletic Conference in RBIs.

Work was an NAIA All American honorable mention. He was 13-4 with a 2.40 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 123 2/3 innings pitched.

Work also won an NAIA Gold Glove Award. The pitcher did not commit an error in his senior season.

In baseball, the Dodgers, led by a trio of newcomers, beat the San Diego Padres, 2-1. Steven Fife, in a spot start for the Dodgers, won his first game of the season.

Scott Van Slyke hit a home run and Yasiel Puig made his major league debut with two hits and ended the game with an impressive double play, catching a deep fly ball in right field at the warning track, then throwing out Chris Denorfia at first base.

The Dodgers and Padres continue their series tonight at Dodger Stadium. First pitch is at 7:10.

In the NHL playoffs, the Kings will look to win their first game in the Western Conference finals tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks at Staples Center.

The Kings are down, 2-0, and are coming off a 4-2 loss against the Blackhawks on Sunday.
