Bryce Collins Tosses Complete Game One-Hitter For Hart In CIF SS Division I First Round – Foothill League Baseball Report – May 19, 2018

Los Alamitos: 0

9 Hart: 3

Bryce Collins turned in another sensational performance, allowing just four Los Alamitos base runners (one hit, three walks) while fanning nine batters in the Indians first round shutout at home. The future Arizona Wildcat’s ERA is down to 0.98 on the season, good for 8 runs in 57 innings.

He was dealing on Friday. “I thought I was really able to mix speeds well, I was throwing four pitches–fastball, both breaking balls and a change, and coach did a nice job setting guys up,” said Collins after the win.

Collins routinely kept hitters off balance with his ability to move from power to off-speed. With the way the Hart defense was playing behind him, the away team didn’t stand a chance.

Hart didn’t need very much offense, but it was a welcome sight to see it was received from an unusual source. Junior Kyle Smisko, who came into the game with just one run batted in on the year, tripled his season total on the day. Smisko went 1-for-2 with two RBI, driving in two of the three Indians’ runs.

“We’ve lost a couple guys to injury, Cole and Trevor Coogan, a couple of our guys and right now we’re looking for everyone to step up. Kyle came up big, and we’re looking for someone next game,” the senior ace said of his teammate.

The CIF Southern Section Division I bracket is a treacherous field, and the Indians have another tough game on the road on Tuesday against Cypress. The Centurions defeated Mission Viejo 5-4 in eight innings after a walk-off home run by Alex Jemal. They were down 4-2 in the sixth and scored a single run in three consecutive innings to rally for victory.

Hart will take on Cypress on Tuesday, with game time yet to be determined.

Valencia: 8

1 Harvard-Westlake: 4

Undoubtedly the upset of the year in California high school baseball. Valencia goes to Harvard-Westlake, the top ranked team in the division and No. 3 team in the country according to Baseball America, and takes the Wolverines down.

And if it wasn’t for a failed protest by Oaks Christian (the team did not report the protest to the umpire before the game began), the Vikings may not have even had the chance to compete.

But compete they did, as sophomore Ryan Kysar, who committed to the University of Arizona this week (and likely will be a teammate of Bryce’s in a couple years) made the start and did just enough to keep the vaunted Harvard-Westlake lineup quiet.

Valencia scored four runs in the top of the first inning, and Harvard-Westlake never fully recovered. The Vikings win snapped a 16-game Harvard-Westlake winning streak, and got Valencia back to .500 at 16-16 overall.

Valencia will host Bishop Amat on Tuesday in the second round.

West Ranch: 1

6 Mira Costa: 2 (F/9)

The Wildcats battled to the bitter end against Mira Costa, falling in extra innings on the road. Alex Burge and Cade Nicole combined for 10 strikeouts and Ryan Camacho went 1-for-4 with the team’s RBI.

West Ranch finishes 19-10 overall on the season.
