Buffalo Bills Sign Hart High Grad Delano Howell

khts_sportsHart High grad and Stanford safety Delano Howell was one of 10 undrafted players signed by the Buffalo Bills after the NFL draft.

Howell played in the defensive backfield for Stanford in his junior and senior seasons.

He is expected to be a special teams player in Buffalo if he makes the team.

In college baseball, The Master’s College’s Charlie Gillies was selected as pitcher of the year in the Golden State Athletic  Conference. The West Ranch High grad from Castaic led the conference in ERA, innings pitched, strikeouts and held opponents to a .180 batting average.

A.J. Work and Bryan Lucas earned spots on the All-Golden State Athletic Conference first team. Lucas, a catcher from Newhall, won a gold glove and threw out a conference leading 26 would-be basestealers.

First baseman Spencer Downs and third baseman Cody Harris also won conference gold gloves. The Master’s College had the top defense in the conference with a .979 fielding percentage as a team.

In high school tennis, the West Ranch boys beat Saugus, 11-7, in a Foothill League match. West Ranch’s No. 1 singles player Baron von Kessler swept his sets, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In soccer, the Santa Clarita Storm played to a 2-2 draw against F.C. Hasental in a National Premier Soccer League game. Matthew Shaxton scored in the first half to give the Storm a 1-0 lead.

Tyler Coombes scored early in the second half to put the Storm up 2-0. But Hasental scored two goals in the second half to tie the score.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah over the weekend.

It was the first win of the season for the reigning West Series champion. He won the pole and the race for the third year in a row.

He is in third place in the West Series standings after three races.

In the NHL playoffs, the Kings took a commanding 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinals against the St. Louis Blues.

The Kings beat the Blues, 5-2, in Game 2. Anze Kopitar scored two goals and Dustin Brown had three assists for the Kings, who took a 4-0 lead in the first period.

The Kings are coming home to Staples Center for Game 3 on Thursday night.
