Buffalo, Vancouver Advance To USL W-League Women’s Soccer Championship Game

khts_sportsThe Buffalo Flash scored two second-half goals and beat the Atlanta Silverbacks, 3-1, in the semifinals of the United Soccer League W-League playoffs last night at Canyon High School.

Buffalo took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, but Atlanta tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 36th minute.

Kelly Parker, the USL scoring champ, scored both second-half goals for Buffalo. Her goal in the 53rd minute broke the 1-1 tie. Parker added an insurance goal in the 81st minute.

Veronica Bouquete, the league leader in assists, was involved in all three goals. She assisted on her team’s first goal, hitting the crossbar on a shot that landed at the feet of teammate Jenny Hammond, who knocked it in the goal. Bouquete also assisted on both of Parker’s goals.

In the other semifinal game, the Vancouver White Caps beat the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues, 3-1.

Vancouver, the Western Conference champions, will play Buffalo in the W-League championship game on Saturday night at Canyon High School. The game starts at 7 and will be televised live on the Fox Soccer Channel.

In hockey, the Kings will be without one of their top defenseman when the NHL season starts in October.

Matt Greene had surgery on his left shoulder and is expected to take three months to recover. Greene, an assistant captain of the Kings, had nine points in 75 games. He was ninth in the league with 238 hits and blocked 126 shots.

The Dodgers lost to the San Diego Padres, 3-2, and dropped seven games out of first place in the National League West standings.

Padres pinch-hitter Oscar Salazar drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning with a one-out RBI single off Dodgers reliever George Sherrill.

The Dodgers lost two of three games to the first-place Padres.

Newly acquired outfielder Scott Podsednik went 0-for-3 with a walk and stole a base. He batted leadoff and knocked Rafael Furcal, who entered the game as the National League’s leading hitter, into the No. 2 spot in the batting order.

James Loney hit a solo home run in the second inning. It was his eighth of the season.

The Dodgers move on to San Francisco to start a weekend series with the Giants. Carlos Monasterios will start for the Dodgers against two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum for the Giants. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
