Canyon Boys Basketball Team Opens Foothill League Play As No. 1 Team in Division 2AA Poll

khts_sportsThe Canyon boys basketball team open Foothill League play as the No. 1 team in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA poll. Canyon is 15-1 and has an eight-game winning streak. The Cowboys are on the road tonight and play Saugus, the No. 12 team in the Division 2AA poll.

The Valencia boys are ranked No. 9 in the Division 1AA poll. The Vikings travel to Golden Valley for the start of the Foothill League season.

West Ranch, ranked No. 16 in Division 1A, is on the road against Hart.

On the girls side, Canyon, ranked No. 5 in Division 2AA, play Saugus, the No. 8 team in Division 2A.

West Ranch, the No. 7 team in Division 1A, plays at Hart.

Valencia travels to play Golden Valley.

In auto racing, Bryan Herta Autosport tabbed open-wheel veteran Alex Tagliani as its driver for the 2012 Izod IndyCar Series.

The team owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta will be competing in its first full season in the IndyCar Series. Bryan Herta Autosport won the Indianapolis 500 last year with Dan Wheldon as its driver.

Tagliani won the pole for the Indy 500 last year and has been racing in Indy cars and Champ Cars since 2000.

In college basketball, The Master’s College men cracked the top 25 of the NAIA Division I poll for the first time this season. The Mustangs are No. 16 after wins over 24th ranked Fresno Pacific and Hope International last week.

The Master’s College is 12-3 and 4-0 against Golden State Athletic Conference opponents.

More good news for The Master’s College: Devin Dyer was selected as the Golden State Athletic Conference player of the week.

He scored 19 points, and all eight points in overtime, in a 59-58 win against Hope International.

In college football, Alabama won the BCS national title over top-ranked LSU, 21-0, the first shutout in the 14-year history of the BCS championship game.

It was Alabama’s second BCS championship in the past three years.

In hockey, the Kings erupted against the Washington Capitals in a 5-2 win at Staples Center.

Kyle Clifford had a goal and an assist and the Kings scored their first goals in regulation in three games.

The Kings are back on the ice on Thursday against the Dallas Stars at Staples Center.
