Canyon Boys Basketball Team Starts Own Tournament With Win Over Lancaster

The Canyon boys basketball team won its first game in its own Canyon Classic Tournament, 63-48, over Lancaster.

Dean Hendrix-Davis scored 18 points and helped Canyon build an early lead in the game.

Canyon plays St. Genevieve tonight in the next round of the tournament.

The Saugus boys basketball team started the Canyon Classic on a winning note as well. The Centurions beat Eastside, 73-42, in their first game of the tournament.

Next up for Saugus is Lancaster tonight.

The Golden Valley girls basketball team lost a close one to Simi Valley, 43-40, in the Golden Valley Tournament.

The Grizzlies had a three-point lead, 40-37, with a little over a minute to play. But Simi Valley scored the final six points of the game to win it.

The Dodgers lost another free agent. Starter Joe Blanton signed with the Los Angeles Angels for a reported $15 million for two years.

Blanton split the 2012 season with the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies. He went 10-13 with a 4.71 ERA. The Angels have been busy in the off-season. They traded for pitcher Tommy Hanson and signed reliever Ryan Madson.

In the NBA, the Lakers beat the New Orleans Hornets, 103-87, and avoided a three-game losing streak. Kobe Bryant scored 29 points and became the fifth player in NBA history to score more than 30,000 points in his career.

He joins Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Karl Malone and Michael Jordan as the only players with 30,000 points.

The Clippers won their fourth game in a row, 112-90, over the visiting Dallas Mavericks. Blake Griffin scored 19 points and Chris Paul had 14 points and 13 assists for the Clippers.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
