Canyon Boys Basketball Team Wins Canyon Classic Tournament

The Canyon boys basketball team won a thriller in the championship game of its own Canyon Classic against Saugus in a all Foothill League final.

Canyon won, 43-42, in a tight, defensive-dominated game.

Marc Carbrera hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for Canyon. He was selected as the tournament MVP.

Chris Lockwood scored 10 points to lead the Centurions.

It was the fourth time in 13 years Canyon has won the Canyon Classic tournament.

The West Ranch boys basketball team lost to Loyola, 78-58, in the championship game of the Santa Monica Tournament.

The West Ranch girls ended the Gold Coast Classic with a 64-20 win over Santa Ynez at Rio Mesa High School.

Whitney Branham scored 15 points for West Ranch.

The Canyon girls beat Stockdale from Bakersfield, 50-29, in the Buena Kiwanis Tournament.

In high school soccer, the Canyon boys split a pair of games at the John Muir Varsity Tournament. Canyon lost the first game, 5-0, to Muir. But the Cowboys bounced back in the second game, 2-0, over Lynwood.

Chad Ybarra scored a goal and gave  Canyon a 1-0 lead against Lynwood.

In college football, Texas A&M freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy. He is the first freshman in the history of the award to win the Heisman Trophy.

In baseball, the Dodgers finally made some big, off-season signings. Starting pitcher Zack Greinke signed a six-year deal worth a reported $147 million with the Dodgers.

Korean left-hander Hyung-Jin Ryu also agreed to a six-year deal with the Dodgers.

The Dodgers have a record payroll of $230 million entering the 2013 season.

In the NBA, the Lakers lost to the Utah Jazz, 117-110, and are three games under .500 at 9-12.

Paul Millsap scored 24 points for the Jazz. Kobe Bryant scored 34 points and was 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.

The Lakers have lost seven of their past 11 games.
