Canyon Boys Soccer Shuts Out Golden Valley 1-0 For First League Win

Canyon picked up just its third win of the season and first in league play and Golden Valley’s league woes continue. The Grizzlies have won just four league games in four seasons.

Possession was hard to come by for Canyon in the early portion of the first half, with pressure from Golden Valley high up the field the Cowboys couldn’t string together more than a couple passes at at time and it looked to be a long afternoon.

Throughout the first half, Cowboys’ strikers were routinely stymied by the bigger and more physical Grizzly defenders and it looked as if the Grizzlies were going to dominate time of possession.

It wasn’t until a counter-attack in the 20th minute of play that the scoring opened up as the Cowboys intercepted an errant pass at midfield.

With one cheeky pass, a Canyon player collected the ball in the middle of the field from nearly 30 yards out, faked left, and hit a screamer into the top right corner of the Golden Valley goal.

Heading into halftime the visitors led, 1-0.

The second half began much like the first, with the Grizzlies determined to play high up the field with pressure, maintaining most of the possession, but they were just a bit unlucky. GV had shots hit the crossbar and post, unable to find the back of the net.

As the final whistle blew, the Golden Valley Grizzlies found themselves on the short end of the stick as they fell, 1-0, to the Canyon Cowboys.

The Grizzlies face an angry Saugus team at home Tuesday, while Canyon hosts the 2-0 Hart Indians. Kickoff for each game is scheduled for 3:15.
