Canyon Boys Soccer Team Beats Great Oak In CIF Playoffs

sportscanyonThe Canyon boys soccer team rallied to beat Great Oak, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs.

Down 1-0 in the first half, Canyon scored two goals with Martin Cornelis knocking in the game-winner on a penalty kick in the second half.

Mohammed Roknipour tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in stoppage time during the first half.

Canyon advances to the semifinals of the Division III playoffs, which continue on Tuesday.

The Saugus girls soccer team continues in the Division II playoffs against Flintridge Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals. Saugus, the reigning Division II champions, is coming off a 5-2 win over Yucaipia. Flintridge Sacred Heart beat St. Lucy’s 5-0 in their second round game.

In college baseball, the College of the Canyons beat Golden West, 9-7. Robert Vickers drove in four runs and was 2-for-4 for COC. Cal Vogelsang scored three runs and was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

The College of the Canyons softball team lost to Santa Barbara, 6-4. Whitney Bruce had two hits and drove in three runs for COC.

In auto racing, Bryan Herta Autosport, owned in part by Valencia’s Bryan Herta, is planning on entering a car in this year’s Indianapolis 500. Colombian driver Sebastian Saavedra will try to qualify for the race in a car backed by Bryan Herta Autosport. This is the first time Bryan Herta Autosport will attempt to qualify for the Indy 500. Herta, a Hart High graduate, competed five times in the Indy 500 as a driver.

In the Winter Olympics, the high-scoring U.S women’s hockey team was shut out in the gold medal game, losing 2-0 to Canada.
Marie-Philip Poulin scored two first-period goals and goaltender Shannon Szabados made 28 saves in the win for Canada.

The United States came into the gold-medal game having outscored opponents 40-2. The only team that produced a more lopsided margin of victory was Canada, outscoring teams 46-2.

The United States won gold and silver in the Nordic combined large hill competition. Billy Demong won gold and Johnny Spillane finished second to take the silver medal.

The United States has 32 medals, eight of them gold, and leads all nations at the Winter Olympics. Germany is second with 26 medals and eight golds.
