Canyon Country’s RJ Johnson Wins First NASCAR Late Model Race At Irwindale

RJ Johnson of Canyon Country won the first NASCAR Late Model race of his career at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday night.

He took over the lead in the Late Model standings at the track with the win.

Johnson was making his fourth career Late Model start at the track. He won the NASCAR Super Trucks championship at Irwindale last year.

“It’s really cool because this time last year, I was the guy behind trying to make my way up,” said Johnson, who drives the No. 15 entry for High Point Racing. “It’s cool to be ahead now and being able to go into a race thinking we don’t have to win. We want to win and we’re going to go for every win we can.”

Johnson finished ahead of Mike Johnson of Covina, who was second, and Christian Copley, a driver from Santa Ynez.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
