Canyon Faces Huge Challenge At San Gorgonio

In a season that has had its shares of highs and lows, the Canyon Cowboys 5-5 (1-4 Foothill League) they managed to sneak into the Div. 6 playoffs as an at-large bid after only managing one win in league play.

Early in the season the Cowboys won four-straight wins against Burbank, Oxnard, Highland and Simi Valley. Heading into league play, they had a winning record of 4-1.

That’s when it all went wrong… they lost three straight allowing 35 or more points in every game and being shutout in one.

Their lone league win came against a depleted Saugus team as they squeaked by with a 35-31 win.

Head Coach Rich Gutierrez was clearly frustrated with his line play for most of the season as defenses were able to get into the backfield at will and disrupt first year starting quarterback Shawn Gallagher’s rhythm.

The Cowboys line must protect Gallagher as he looks to distribute the ball to Taylor Tepesano, Carson Strickland and Ryan Valdes.

Canyon looks to turn some heads against San Andreas League Champion, San Gorgonio Spartans 6-4 (5-0 San Andreas League), the team that beat Golden Valley in the Semifinals last season. It would be a great upset for this Cowboys team to leave San Bernardino with a playoff victory.

Kickoff from San Gorgonio is scheduled for 7:30.
