Canyon Football Team Enters Foothill League Play Undefeated

khts_sportsThe Foothill League football season opens tonight and all six teams have winning records.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the bunch is undefeated Canyon. The Cowboys have a 5-0 record and soundly beat Dos Pueblos, 36-3, last week. Kicker Mohammad Roknipour gives Canyon a weapon most high schools don’t have.

He kicked a school record 57-yard field goal against Dos Pueblos. There are NFL teams that don’t have a kicker with kind of leg strength.

Canyon plays Saugus (3-2) at College of the Canyons tonight.

Listen to the game tonight at 7:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

Valencia (4-1) is looking to rebound after a 39-24 loss to Loyola last week. It was the first loss for Valencia, the reigning Foothill League champs, this season.

Valencia running back Steven Manfro has scored 21 touchdowns. Let’s see how many he can get against West Ranch (3-2).

It might not be that many. West Ranch has had two weeks to prepare for Valencia. The last time West Ranch played, the Wildcats beat St. Francis, 35-34.

Hart (4-1) has won three games in a row and is also coming off a bye. The Indians will play Golden Valley (3-2) at Canyon High School. Golden Valley comes into league play with a winning record for the second time in school history.

Golden Valley is coming off a 35-21 win over San Marino. Hart beat Birmingham, 30-7, two weeks ago.

The Santa Clarita Christian football team plays West Shores at Canyon High School on Saturday.

The Trinity Classical Academy football team is on the road against Clovis Christian on Saturday.

In college football, the College of the Canyons hosts El Camino College on Saturday night. Listen to the game starting at 7:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

In high school cross country, the Saugus boys and girls teams won the Foothill League meet at the redesigned course at Central Park.

Golden Valley’s Kristian Martinez won the boys race. He was followed by a pack of Saugus boys runners, led by Robert Pion in third place. The seven Saugus runners finished in the top-13 of the race.

Stephanie Bulder from Saugus won the girls race. She was followed by five of her teammates. Emily McCarty was second, followed by Karis Frankian in third.

In high school volleyball, the Saugus girls swept Canyon. Saugus setter Ashley Guthrie recorded 20 assists and had four aces and four blocks.

In hockey, the Kings host the Vancouver Canucks tonight at Staples Center. The Kings are coming off a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers in their home opener on Tuesday.

The Canucks have only one loss in the young season. That loss came last week in Vancouver against the Kings.

Nothing like a little grudge match in the fourth game of the season.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
