Canyon Football Team Forfeits Game Against Golden Valley

khts_sportsThe Canyon football team will have to give back its share of the Foothill League championship after using an ineligible player against Golden Valley on Thursday night.

Canyon forfeits the game and leaves Valencia as the lone winner of the Foothill League title. Canyon and Valencia finished in a tie for first place in league with 4-1 records.

Canyon coach Rich Gutierrez said the ineligible player was in the game for two plays when he emptied his bench in the fourth quarter of a 48-21 blowout against Golden Valley.

Canyon’s spot in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs will not be affected. The Cowboys play Palmdale in the first round on Friday night.

Golden Valley is credited with its first Foothill League win in school history.
