Canyon Football Team Rallies In Second Half Against Hart

khts_sportsThe Canyon football team is back after a come-from-behind, 42-24, win over Hart. Canyon scored 28 unanswered points in the second half and now has a shot at winning the Foothill League championship.

Hart meanwhile dropped to 2-2 in league and will be fighting for a playoff spot in the league finale on Friday night.

Hart was up 24-14 in the third quarter when Canyon mounted its comeback. Quarterback Jonathon Jerozal threw three touchdown passes, rushed for two more, and rallied the Cowboys.

Canyon receiver Drew Wolitarsky caught 10 passes for 180 yards and scored a touchdown.

Saugus kept pace with Canyon for first place in the Foothill League standings with a 35-14 win over West Ranch. Jared Carbajal ran in two touchdowns and passed for another. He gained 106 yards on 19 carries and has 1,010 yards rushing on the season.

Valencia is also in the mix for the Foothill League championship after crushing Golden Valley, 35-8. Ryan Gorman and Ricky Vega each had interception returns for touchdowns for Valencia.

Valencia and Saugus play in the Foothill League finale on Friday night. Canyon plays Golden Valley.

The Santa Clarita Christian football team shut out Animo Leadership, 42-0, and clinched a playoff berth in its first season in 11-man football.

Santa Clarita Christian is 2-1 in the San Joaquin League and can finish no worse than second place.

In college football, College of the Canyons squeaked past Ventura College, 36-34, and snapped a four-game losing streak.

COC’s Jeff Flores kicked a 23-yard field goal as time expired to win the game. It was his second field goal of the game.

Charles “M.J.” Engle from Coos Bay, Ore., won the men’s race in the Santa Clarita Marathon in 2 hours, 35 minutes, 7 seconds.

Santa Clarita’s Jana-Rose Whatley won the women’s marathon race in 3 hours, 31 minutes, 28 seconds.

In the New York Marathon, Canyon High graduate Lauren Fleshman finished in 16th place. She ran the first marathon of her career and is training to try out for the US Olympic team next summer.

In hockey, the Kings, after a hot start, are mired in a four-game losing streak. They are on the road to play the San Jose Sharks tonight.

The Kings lost to the Penguins, 3-2, in a shootout on Saturday night.

The Sharks aren’t doing much better and have lost two of their past three games.
