Canyon Football Team Used Ineligible Player In Two Games

khts_sportsThe Canyon football team used an ineligible player in two games, but will only have to forfeit one game, CIF Southern Section Director of Communications Thom Simmons said.

Canyon used an ineligible player in the games against Saugus and Golden Valley. The Cowboys won both games, but will have to forfeit the win against Saugus.

The Canyon football coaches and administration admitted to using an ineligible player in both games. Coach Rich Gutierrez said he filed transfer paperwork with the school administration, but it was never processed with the CIF Southern Section.

“We have not received the official letter from the Canyon administration,” Simmons said in an e-mail. “However, they have informed us they had an ineligible player participate in two contests (Saugus and Golden Valley). However, the player in question would have been eligible if the proper paperwork had been filed by the school in question.”

As a result, Canyon only has to forfeit one game, the initial game against Saugus. The win against Golden Valley in the Foothill League finale still stands.

“In the case where it is determined that an ineligible player competed due to the failure of the school administration to submit the proper paper work which would have granted immediate eligibility with no restrictions, i.e. transfer eligibility with no restrictions,” Simmons said, “the school would only be forced to forfeit the initial game won or tied that the student in question played.

The Saugus football team can claim a share of the Foothill League championship because of the Canyon forfeit. Valencia finished with a 4-1 record to win its third league championship in a row. Saugus has a 4-1 record in league because of the forfeit by Canyon. The Cowboys drop to 3-2 in league play.

Simmons said Canyon’s forfeit will not affect the playoff pairings for the Southern Section Northern Division. Canyon will open at home against Palmdale and Saugus will travel to Highland in the first round.

Saugus coach Jason Bornn confirmed that the Centurions are co-champions with Valencia in the Foothill League.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
