No. 11 Canyon girl’s basketball asserted its power over Golden Valley early and often in a 70-23 rout with four players finishing in double figures.
As the visiting Cowboys took the floor Friday night, one thing was clear, the mismatch in size. The Cowboys’ roster boasts three players who are 6 feet or taller, with the tallest player on the Grizzlies not reaching 6 feet.
It was clear from the start that Coach Haayer’s plan was to get the ball deep in the paint to the likes of Rachel Bowers and Co. Canyon started the game on an 11-0 run and never looked back. Golden Valley didn’t score their first points til 3:03 left in he first quarter.
It was more of the same in the second frame, as Boise State commit Rachel Bowers controlled things in the low post. She finished 5-for-10 for 14 points and 12 boards.
With a halftime score of 48-14, the game was well in hand for the Cowboys.
In the second half, Canyon Talia Taufaasau made it a point to control the clock and possession more by holding on to the ball late in the shot clock and dumping it off to one of the “bigs” or kicking it out to Ellie Villavicencio or Julia Fung for the 3.
With a running clock and the game well in hand to start the 4th Quarter, the Cowboy bench was called on.
In a decisive victory the Cowboys defeated the Grizzlies, 70-23.
