Canyon Girls Basketball Team Beats Huntington Beach In CIF Quarterfinals

khts_sportsThe Canyon girls basketball team beat Huntington Beach, 69-57, and advanced to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.

Canyon went on a 14-2 run to start the third quarter and snap a halftime tie, 26-26. Adriana Dent and Alia McCoy each scored a game-high 19 points.

The fifth-seeded Canyon girls will play second-seeded Buena in the semifinals on Friday night. It is the first time since 2006 that the Canyon girls have reached the semifinals of the CIF playoffs.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls saw their magical playoff run come to an end against Valley Christian, 61-52, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division 6A playoffs.

Taylor Cubas scored 27 points and had seven assists in the loss. Teammate Katie Eberlein scored 18 points and made six 3-pointers.

The Hart boys soccer team shut out University, 1-0, in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

Ben Kret scored the lone goal of the game in overtime. The two teams played to a scoreless tie in regulation. Kret knocked in the game winner off a shot by Niko Ferrero that ricocheted off the goal post.

Hart will play Fontana at home in the quarterfinals of the Division 3 playoffs on Friday. Fontana beat Katella of Anaheim, 2-1, in the second round.

It is the first time since 1983 that a Hart boys soccer team has reached the quarterfinals of the CIF playoffs.

In college softball, College of the Canyons is on the road for a game against Reedley College today.

The Master’s College baseball team is home for a doubleheader against San Diego Christian today.

The College of the Canyons baseball team is on the road and will play Orange Coast College today.

The Lakers needed overtime, but they beat the Portland Trail Blazers, 106-101, and won their second game in a row.

The Lakers went on a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Kobe Bryant scored 37 points and had nine rebounds. Lamar Odom scored 13 points off the bench.

The Lakers return to Los Angeles for a game against the Clippers on Friday night.

In baseball, Dodgers starter Vicente Padilla will have elbow surgery and could miss several weeks of the season.

Padilla has a damaged nerve in his right arm. He was the opening day starter last season for the Dodgers, but he was expected to start the 2011 season in bullpen. The Dodgers bullpen already took a hit when Ronald Beliasrio failed to report to spring training.

The Kings beat the Ducks, 3-2, on a goal by Willie Mitchell in the third period. The game was tied 2-2 after two periods. Ryan Smyth and Anze Kopitar each scored in the first period.

The Ducks got a goal from Teemu Selanne in the in the first period. Corey Perry tied the game with a goal in the second period.

Mitchell scored his second goal of the season to win the game early in the third.

Next up for the Kings are the Minnesota Wild tonight at Staples Center. Listen to the game on AM 1220, KHTS. The puck drops at 7:30.
