Canyon Girls Basketball Team Ranked No. 1 In CIF Preseason Poll

khts_sportsThe CIF Southern Section preseason basketball polls are out and the Canyon girls are No. 1 in Division 2AA.

Canyon is 4-0 to start the season and won the Nike Central Valley Tournament last week. Next up for the Canyon girls is the Burroughs Optimist Tournament starting on Thursday.

The Saugus girls are ranked at No. 4 in the Division 2A poll. The West Ranch girls are No. 10 in the Division 1A poll. The Santa Clarita Christian girls are No. 7 in the Division 5A poll.

On the boys side, Valencia is No. 6 in the Division 1AA poll. Mater Dei is the top-ranked team in Division 1AA.

The Canyon boys are No. 5 in Division 2AA. Thousand Oaks has the top spot in Division 2AA.

In college basketball, the College of the Canyons women reached the final of the Rose City Classic in Pasadena and lost to Pasadena City College, 71-65.

Angelica Sahagun scored 21 points in the game against Pasadena and was selected to the all-tournament team. Bev Weaver scored a career-high 32 points in the first round against Butte College and also earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

The COC men’s basketball team beat Moorpark College, 66-58. Rafael Love scored 17 points and had eight rebounds for COC.

In baseball, the Dodgers are bringing back outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. He signed a two-year, $2 million deal with the Dodgers and will most likely be the team’s fifth outfielder.

He hit. 256 with two home runs as a reserve outfielder for the Dodgers last year.

In hockey, the Kings fired coach Terry Murray after a disappointing start to the season. The Kings have lost four games in a row and six of their last eight.

The Kings start a four-game East Coast road trip tonight in Boston against the Bruins, the reigning Stanley Cup champions.
