Canyon, Hart, Trinity Advance In CIF Football Playoffs

khts_sportsSix teams from the Santa Clarita Valley entered the CIF football playoffs. Only three are still alive.

Canyon and Hart won their first round Northern Division playoff games. The Trinity Classical Academy reached the semifinals of the Division II 8-man football playoffs.

Valencia, Saugus and Santa Clarita Christian lost their first-round playoff games.

Canyon scored all its points in the second quarter and shut out Palmdale, 21-0. Canyon’s Drew Wolitarsky caught two touchdown passes. Quarterback Jonathan Jerozal threw for 244 yards and Wolitarsky caught four passes for 117 yards.

Hart pulled off one of the stunners of the first round of playoffs, scoring a touchdown in the final minute to eliminate Palos Verdes, 15-14.

Hart freshman receiver Trent Irwin caught a 51-yard touchdown pass to bring the Indians within a point, 14-13, in the fourth quarter. Rather than kick an extra point and tie the score, Hart decided to go for two to take the lead. Wes Fitzpatrick caught a pass from quarterback Connor Wingenroth to give Hart a one-point lead with 38 seconds left in the game.

Valencia, the No. 4 seed in the Northern Division playoffs, lost to Moorpark, 17-10. Valencia had a 10-9 lead in the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold it. Moorpark eliminated Valencia from the playoffs for the third time in the past four seasons.

Saugus lost to Highland, 27-0, and only gained 104 yards of total offense in the game.

The Santa Clarita Christian football team lost to Salesian, 69-0, and made a quick exit from the Northeast  Division playoffs.

In high school cross country, the Golden Valley boys won the Southern Section Division II championship at Mt. San Antonio College. Golden Valley’s Kristian Martinez won the Division II boys race and the individual championship.

The Saugus girls were the runner-ups in the Southern Section Division II race and ended their six-year reign as champions.

The Simi Valley girls won the Division II championship. Karis Frankian of Saugus was second in the girls race. Simi Valley’s Sarah Baxter won the Division II girls race and paced her team to the championship.

The Hart boys finished third in the Division II race. The Golden Valley boys and the Harts boys cross country teams qualified for the CIF state meet. The Saugus girls also advance to state.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
