Canyon High Grad Greg Pursley Wins NASCAR West Series Race

khts_sportsCanyon High graduate Greg Pursley has been on a roll in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. He continued that roll by winning the West Series race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday night.

He won the pole and led a race-high 164 laps en route to his fifth win of the West Series season. He leads the West Series standings after seven races. It was his eighth career West Series win.

In other races, Valencia’s Connor Cantrell took over the lead in the NASCAR Super Trucks standings at Irwindale. He finished in fourth in Saturday night’s race and lead-frogged over Ryan Partridge, who finished 19th, for the top spot in the Super Trucks.

RJ Johnson of Canyon Country was third in the NASCAR Super Trucks race. Jeff Peterson from Riverside won the Super Trucks race.

In bodybuilding, Santa Clarita’s Cellekque Dorsey (pictured) won three championships at the Memorial Day Muscle Beach Figure Competitcellekque_dorseyion in Venice.

The 41-year-old single mom won the masters figure, novice figure short and novice figure overall championships.

In hockey, the Kings added another big name to its rosters, signing free-agent Simon Gagne to a two-year deal. Gagne is a two-time all star and has scored at least 20 goals in a season seven times. He scored a career-high 47 goals for the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2005-06 season.

He scored 17 goals during the regular season and had five goals and seven assists in the playoffs for the Tampa Bay Lightning last year.

In baseball, the Angels beat the visiting Tigers, 5-1, behind home runs by Torii Hunter and Vernon Wells. The Mariners beat the A’s, 2-1, the Twins shut out the Rays, 7-0, the Rangers clobbered the Orioles, 13-4, the White Sox beat the Royals, 5-4, the Indians doubled up on the Yankees, 6-3, and the Blue Jays beat the Red Sox, 9-7.

In the National League, the Padres beat the Giants, 5-3, the Phillies shut out the Marlins, 1-0, the Cardinals blanked the Reds, 1-0, the Braves beat the Rockies 4-1, the Nationals beat the Cubs, 5-4 in 10 innings, the Pirates beat the Astros, 5-3, and the Diamondbacks beat the Brewers, 8-6.
