Canyon High Grad Wins NASCAR West Series Championship

khts_sportsCanyon High graduate Greg Pursley won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship at All American Speedway in Roseville over the weekend.

He finished second in the race at Roseville and clinched the first West Series title of his career with one race to go.

Pursley won six of the first eight West Series races and built a huge lead in the standings. His second-place finish at Roseville was his fourth top five in a row.

Eric Holmes won the race at Roseville, his second in a row.

Connor Cantrell of Santa Clarita won the NASCAR Super Trucks championship at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, the first of his career.

He entered the season finale with a four-race winning streak and a 40-point lead in the Super Trucks standings. All he needed to do was start the race to win the championship.

He finished second in the season finale. Ryan Partridge of Rancho Cucamonga won the race.

Ron Hornaday Jr. won the NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, his second in a row and his fourth of the season.

Hornaday, a four-time Truck Series champion and former Saugus Speedway champ, is fourth in the Truck Series standings, 21 points out of first.

In college volleyball, The Master’s College women swept Hope International in three games. Samantha Dougherty led The Master’s College with 15 kills and had 11 digs.

The College of the Canyons women’s team beat West LA College in three games.

In college soccer, The Master’s College men shut out Pt. Loma Nazarene, 4-0, scoring three goals in the second half.  Jorge Serrano and David Alegria each had a goal and an assist for The Master’s College.

The Master’s College women, ranked No. 21 in the NAIA, lost 1-0, to Pt. Loma Nazarene, the No. 5 team in the NAIA.

The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team beat Pierce, 2-1, and improved to 5-0 in Western State Conference play. It was the first time since 2005 that COC has beaten Pierce.

The COC men’s soccer team lost to Oxnard, 2-0.

In hockey, the Kings make their home debut against the St. Louis Blues tonight at Staples Center. The Kings played their first two games in Europe and are coming off a 3-2 overtime win against the Philadelphia Flyers.
