Canyon Kicker’s Eligibility Up In The Air

sportscanyonCanyon High School has a great kicker on campus. Whether he will be able to play on the football team is undecided.

Mohammad Roknipour, a transfer student from Iran, has yet to be cleared to play on the varsity team. There’s no doubt he can kick; it’s been reported that he can make 65-yard field goals in practice, but there is some debate about his eligibility and grade.

It has yet to be determined if he is a junior or a senior and he might not be eligible to play football because he enrolled in the middle of the school year, in January of 2009.

Looking good on the O-line
Two senior linemen from the Foothill League made the L.A. Times watch list.

Canyon High senior Shane Moniz, listed at 6-3 and 270 pounds, and Valencia senior Nolan O’Sullivan, at 6-3 and 260, are among the top linemen in the L.A. Times coverage area. That includes teams from Orange, Ventura, Riverside, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties.

Sil Ajawara, a senior at Tesoro High School, is tops on the L.A. Times list.

Santa Clarita Christian linebacker turning heads
It shouldn’t be hard to spot Collin Keoshian. He’s 6-2, 238-pound linebacker for tiny Santa Clarita Christian’s eight-man football team. He’s getting some NCAA Division I attention these days, reportedly from New Mexico and New Mexico State, and it might be the beginning of a recruiting war for Keoshian.

He will be an integral part of Santa Clarita Christian’s program, coming off its first CIF championship last season.

CIF championship will go through St. Bonaventure
If the polls are correct, especially USA Today’s high school football rankings, St. Bonaventure will be the toughest team facing the Foothill League when playoffs begin.

St. Bonaventure is ranked 22nd in the nation, fourth in the West Region, by USA Today.

No team from the Foothill League has St. Bonaventure on its preseason schedule, a change from years past when Saugus and Hart would regularly play St. Bonaventure before the Foothill League season began.

On the bright side, it’s probably a blessing Oaks Christian isn’t in the same division as St. Bonaventure or the Foothill League teams. The Nick Montana-led Oaks Christian football team is ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 7 in the nation by USA Today. Good luck Bishop Diego and Carpinteria.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
