Canyon QB Sets School Record In Win Over Saugus

khts_sportsCanyon quarterback Jonathan Jerozal set a school record in his team’s 51-28 win over Saugus in the Foothill League opener.

Jerozal threw three touchdown passes, giving him 62 in his career, and broke the record set by Nate Longshore.

Canyon receiver Drew Wolitarsky caught two touchdown passes. Coley Apsay hauled in Jerozal’s record-breaking touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Saugus quarterback Jared Carbajal threw two touchdown passes in the loss.

The Valencia football team scored four touchdowns in a 31-14 win over West Ranch. Running back Jake Solley rushed for two touchdowns and gained 99 yards.

Quarterback Sean Murphy threw a touchdown pass and rushed for a touchdown.

West Ranch quarterback Garrit Mouw gave the Wildcats a short-lived, 7-0 lead, with a touchdown pass to Matt Christensen in the first quarter.

The Hart football team beat Golden Valley, 28-3, to win its fifth game in a row. Hart quarterback Cory Mayes rushed for two touchdowns in the first half, but also threw three interceptions.

Connor Wingenroth started the second half at quarterback for Hart and guided the Indians to two second-half touchdowns. He threw one touchdown pass and rushed for 42 yards.

Golden Valley running back Earl Johnson gained 110 yards in 20 carries.

The Santa Clarita Christian football team snapped a four-game losing streak and beat Crean Lutheran, 35-0. It was Santa Clarita Christian’s first win since the season opener.

Quarterback Connor Harvey scored two rushing touchdowns, but only played the first half. He injured his ankle and did not return to the game after halftime.

Running back Trevor Lopez rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown.

The Trinity Classical Academy football team crushed Antelope Valley Christian, 60-8, to stay undefeated and improve to 2-0 in the Omega League.

Running back Spencer Klehn gained 120 yards and scored a touchdown.

The College of the Canyons football team lost to El Camino College, 42-21. COC quarterback Chris Owens threw for 188 yards and a touchdown.

In auto racing, Dan Wheldon, driving an entry for Bryan Herta Autosport, died in a crash in the IndyCar Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Wheldon was involved in a 15-car crash on lap 12 of the race. He was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Wheldon won the Indy 500 in May driving a car owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta and won an IndyCar Series championship driving for Michael Andretti.
