Canyon, Saugus Advance To Second Round Of CIF Girls Basketball Playoffs

khts_sportsThe Canyon and Saugus girls are still alive in the CIF basketball playoffs. The same can’t be said for the Valencia and West Ranch girls.

The Canyon girls beat Redlands, 61-38, in the first round of the Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs. Alia McCoy led Canyon with 22 points.

Eighth-seeded Canyon plays ninth-seeded Segerstrom in the second round on Wednesday.

The Saugus girls took care of Claremont, 57-29, in the first round of the Division 2A playoffs. Megan Dawe scored 24 points for Saugus, the seventh-seeded team in Division 2A.

Saugus plays 10th-seeded Norco in the second round.

The West Ranch girls lost to Pacifica, 53-44, in the first round of the Division 1A playoffs.

Valencia, a wild-card entry in the Division 1AA playoffs, lost to top-seeded and nationally ranked Long Beach Poly, 63-26.

In the boys basketball playoffs, Canyon made quite an opening-round statement, eliminating Godinez, 70-29, in the first round of the Division 2AA playoffs.

Coley Apsay scored 22 points and made five 3-pointers.

Canyon, the second-seeded team in the Division 2AA playoffs, plays Tesoro in the second round on Tuesday.

The West Ranch boys advanced to the second round of the Division 1A playoffs with a 72-62 win over Paramount.

West Ranch plays Edison in the second round.

The Saugus boys lost to Inglewood, 60-49, in the Division 2AA playoffs.

The Trinity boys lost to Arshag Dickranian, 51-39, in the second round of the Division 6 playoffs.

In the CIF girls soccer playoffs, Saugus is headed to the second round in Division 1 after a grueling win over Tesoro. Saugus won the game, 5-4, on penalty kicks. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation and were scoreless in two overtime periods.

Saugus plays San Clemente in the second round on Wednesday.

The Hart girls went to penalty kicks against Chaminade in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs and lost, 3-2.

Hart and Chaminade were tied, 0-0, in regulation and were scoreless for the two overtime periods.

The Valencia girls lost to Redlands, 4-0, in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.
