Canyon, Saugus Girls Advance In Soccer Playoffs

Saugus, Valencia, West Ranch girls win first round basketball playoff games.

The girls Division II soccer playoffs got off to a crazy start Thursday with Canyon and Saugus each scoring eight goals in their first round games.

The Canyon girls soccer team got eight goals from seven players and shut out an overmatched Burroughs of Burbank team, 8-0. Katie Dillon led the way with two goals for Canyon.

Nicole Pennick scored two goals for Saugus in an 8-1 win over Highland. Valencia lost to Arcadia, 2-1.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls soccer team lost its first-round Division VI playoff game, 4-3, in overtime to Schurr. Kayla Gale scored two of Santa Clarita Christian’s goals.

In the girls basketball playoffs, West Ranch, Saugus and Valencia all won their first round playoff games.

Erin Ruiz hit a last-second, 3-pointer from midcourt to give West Ranch a 52-49 win over Whittier in the Division II-AA playoffs. Valencia got 17 points and 17 rebounds from Starla Wright and beat Pioneer Valley, 63-40, in the Division II-AA bracket. Nicole Hicks scored 25 points for Saugus in a come-from-behind, 59-43, win over Palos Verdes Peninsula in Division II-A.

In college basketball, The Master’s College men lost to Cal Baptist, 71-53, and the women lost a heartbreaker to Cal Baptist, 74-70.
