Canyon, Valencia Girls Basketball Teams Reach Semifinals Of Burroughs Tournament

khts_sportsThe Canyon and Valencia girls basketball teams reached the semifinals of the Burroughs tournament.

Canyon beat Burbank, 63-31, in the quarterfinals. Alia McCoy scored 15 points for undefeated Canyon.

Valencia eliminated Monroe, 44-40, behind 14 points from Lauren Spargo. Faith Anumba added 11 for Valencia.

The Saugus girls basketball team lost to Beverly Hills, 59-50, in a non-league game. Megan Dawe scored 15 points and Kim Smither had 11 points and eight rebounds for Saugus.

The Saugus boys basketball team won its first two games in the San Fernando Valley Invitational and have moved into the regional final against Alemany.

Saugus beat Servite, 68-56, in the opening round, then knocked off LA University, 81-77, in overtime to reach the regional final. Saugus plays Alemany tonight at 7:30.

The Golden Valley boys basketball team lost to Eastside, 57-40, in the first round of the San Fernando Valley Invitational tournament. Golden Valley won the tournament last year. After losing in the first round, Golden Valley bounced back with a 68-58 win over North Hollywood in the consolation bracket.

The West Ranch boys basketball team won its first-round game, 76-64, over Orange Lutheran in the tournament. But West Ranch ran into trouble in the second round, losing to Santiago Corona, 67-49. West Ranch takes on Verdugo Hills tonight.

In high school soccer, the Saugus girls beat Valencia, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Buena Tournament. Stacy Atwater scored the lone goal of the game in the second half on a muddy, rain-soaked field.

Saugus will be making its third final appearance in the past four Buena Tournaments. The Saugus girls will play Oaks Christian in the championship game. Oaks Christian beat Buena, 2-0, in the other semifinal.

The Master’s College women’s basketball team won two games in the National Christian College Athletic Association West Regional Classic at Simpson University in Redding.

The Master’s College beat host Simpson, 79-64, on Saturday. The night before, The Master’s College beat Southwestern of Arizona, 87-51.

Erica Inge scored 17 points and had six assists against Simpson. Theresa Brown scored 20 points and had seven rebounds against Southwestern.

The Master’s College men’s basketball team also won two games in the West Regional Classic. The Master’s College men beat Southwestern, 74-56, and Simpson, 63-37.

Joey Fuca had 24 points against Southwestern. Kevin Dyer had 16 against Simpson.

In college football, Canyon High graduate JJ DiLuigi rushed for 98 yards and scored a touchdown for Brighham Young University in the New Mexico Bowl. BYU beat the University of Texas, El Paso, 52-24.

DiLuigi, the starting running back for BYU, was the team’s leading rusher and also caught three passes for 21 yards.

The Kings lost to the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-2. Kyle Clifford and Wayne Simmonds scored goals for the Kings against the reigning Stanley Cup champions.

The Kings are back in action against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night.
