Canyons Aquatic Club Sending 5 Swimmers To National Meet

khts_sportsFive swimmers from the Canyons Aquatics Club qualified for the Conoco Phillips National Championships in Irvine.

Michelle Duraj, Kearsten Livingstone and Chelsea Griffiths will be competing in the women’s portion of the meet. Konrad Antoniuk and Riley Mita are on the men’s side of the meet.

Duraj, from Golden Valley, will be competing in the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke. Livingstone, a graduate of Canyon High School, is in the 100 and 200 butterfly. Griffiths, a Hart High graduate, is in the 100 backstroke.

Atoniuk, from Hart High, and Mita, from West Ranch, are both competing in the 1,500 freestyle.

The national meet begins today and ends on Saturday.

The Lakers made it official, signing coach Phil Jackson for one more season and a chance for another three-peat.

Jackson has won 11 NBA championships as coach. He has won five with the Lakers and guided the team to the past two NBA championships.

In more basketball news, the UCLA Bruins added national championship hero Tyus Edney to its staff.

Edney is best remembered for making a mad, full-court dash to score the winning basket against Missouri in the 1995 NCAA basketball tournament. The Bruins went on to win the national championship, the 11th in school history.

Edney will be the Bruins’ director of men’s basketball operations.

The Dodgers can add pitching woes to their list of problems. Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda gave up five runs and reliever Jeff Weaver coughed up another five runs in the Padres 10-5 win.

Kuroda only lasted four innings, giving up seven hits and walking one. Will Venable hit a three-run home run off Kuroda in a five-run fourth inning for the Padres. Chase Headley added a three-run home run in the sixth inning off of Weaver.

Matt Kemp went 5-for-5 and the Dodgers pounded out 14 hits, but the team lost its sixth game in a row. The Dodgers are in fourth place in the National League West standings, nine games behind the first-place Padres.

The Dodgers continue their series with the Padres tonight at Dodger Stadium. It will be newly acquired Ted Lilly making his Dodgers debut on the mound against Mat Latos for the Padres.

Pregames starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
