Canyon’s Clay Kasdorf Drops 48, Creates Tie Atop Foothill League Basketball Standings

khts_sportsCanyon’s Clay Kasdorf picked the right night to have a career game.

He scored 48 points, the most of any player in the Santa Clarita Valley this season, in a 98-90, double overtime win againt West Ranch on Friday night.

Canyon and West Ranch are tied for first place in the Foothill League standings with two games to play.

Canyon is on the road for its last two league games and plays Golden Valley on Tuesday.

West Ranch is also away for its last two league games and plays Saugus on Tuesday.

In other Foothill League games, the Saugus boys squeaked past Valencia, 56-54. Matt Coleman scored 19 points for Saugus. Troy Hammel scored 16 points to lead Valencia.

The Hart boys beat Golden Valley, 70-59. Freshman Myles Franklin scored 13 points for Hart. Golden Valley’s Chris Benitez scored 15 points to lead all scorers.

The Foothill League leaders in girls basketball both lost, setting up an interesting final week.

West Ranch pulled off an unlikely win over Canyon, 44-43. West Ranch’s Whitney Branham hit the game-winner in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats, after trailing by two points at halftime, outscored Canyon, 16-8, in the fourth quarter.

The Valencia girls beat Saugus, 62-50. Megan Emmer scored 14 points for Valencia.

Canyon and Saugus are tied for first place in the Foothill League standings with two games to play. Canyon plays at Golden Valley on Tuesday.

Saugus is home against West Ranch on Tuesday.

The Master’s College men’s basketball team lost to Hope International, 60-58, after building a 15-point lead.

Anthony Cammon scored 18 points and had six assists for The Master’s College, the No. 13 team in the NAIA.

The Master’s College women beat Hope International, 76-59. Ella Joines and Morgan Schwegler each scored 12 points for The Master’s College.

The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team won its fifth game in a row, 89-67, over Bakersfield College.

Bev Weaver scored 30 points for COC which is tied with Bakersfield for first place in the Western State Conference South Division.

The COC men beat Bakersfield, 75-59. Wesley Bartole scored 12 points for COC.

In college baseball, The Master’s College swept a doubleheader against Arizona Christian. The Mustangs won the first game 4-2 and the nightcap 2-0.

Spencer Downs hit a home run in the second game. James Scott tossed a three-hit shutout.

The COC baseball team split a pair of games in the Southcoast Tournament. The Cougars won the first game, 6-1, over Rio Hondo College.

They lost the second game, 11-3, to Mt. San Antonio College. Jake Jelmini was 5-for-7 with a home run and four RBIs in the two games.
