The Canyon Country Little League recognizes all children need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance, which the Challenger program offers, officials said.

“It is a great way to get these kids involved in sports and be treated as equal,” said CCLL President Andy Steier. “It is a phenomenal program to be able to see these kids come out to play baseball and see the smiles on their faces.”

Challenger baseball gives everyone a chance to play, he said.

Challenger teams can include those who are blind or visually impaired, amputees or conditions that impair mobility, mentally or emotionally challenged, autistic, downs syndrome, or cerebral palsy.

Before this program, the closest baseball program for disabled kids in Santa Clarita was in the San Fernando Valley.

Challenger baseball is free to all participants.

Registration will open at the end of September for the next season. It can be done through their website or onsite at 16054 Sierra Highway in Santa Clarita.
