J.C. Cloney is becoming a one-man wrecking crew for the West Ranch baseball team.
He hit a home run and drove in three runs in West Ranch’s 9-1 win over Canyon. Cloney also pitched six innings and won his fifth game of the season.
Jagger Rusconi and Gabe Peralta each had three hits for West Ranch.
Valencia’s Brian Mundell hit a grand slam in his team’s 13-2 win over Golden Valley. Keston Hiura was 5-for-5 for Valencia.
The Hart baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and rallied to beat Saugus, 6-5.
In high school softball, Saugus, the reigning Foothill League champion, jumped all over Hart, 11-5, in the league opener at the Hart PONY Complex. Alyssa Rodriguez was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and drove in five runs.
The Valencia softball team shut out West Ranch, 4-0. Vikings starter Carly Mortensen tossed a five-hitter and struck out 11.
The Canyon softball team beat Golden Valley, 13-2. Lexie Lotito and Kaelie Doyle each had four hits for Canyon.
In auto racing, Bryan Herta Autosport will have a new driver in its Firestone Indy Lights entry for the Grand Prix of Long Beach race this weekend.
Nick Andries, a veteran of the Star Mazda Series, will be in the Bryan Herta Autosport No. 28 car for the Indy Lights race on Sunday.
Andries is making his Indy Lights series debut at Long Beach in the car owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta.
In college baseball, the College of the Canyons lost to Pierce, 2-0. Ryan Blakely gave up only four hits and pitched eight shutout innings for Pierce.
Jake Jelmini was 1-for-4 with a double and Justin Sheehan was 1-for-3 with a double, the only extra-base hits for COC.
The Kings begin the NHL playoffs against the Vancouver Canucks tonight. But the playoffs are not starting well for the Kings.
Forward Brad Richardson is out indefinitely after having an emergency appendectomy. He has five goals and eight points in 59 games for the Kings.
Game 1 of the first round playoff series is in Vancouver. The puck drops at 7:30.
The Dodgers won their home opener, 2-1, over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. Andre Ethier hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
