COC Baseball Team Hits Five Home Runs Against LA Mission College

khts_sportsThe College of the Canyons bats came alive in a 21-12 win over LA Mission College. COC hit five home runs, two by Cal Vogelsang. He was 4-for-5 with six RBIs.

Teammate Kenny Shanahan was 4-for-6 with five RBIs.

Hugo Hernandez, Jeremy Weber and Sean Sweeney each homered for COC.

 

The Master’s College baseball team came up short against Concordia, 14-8. Joe Zeller hit a home run and drove in five runs for The Master’s College. Jared Otto had three hits, including a double and scored two runs.

In high school golf, the West Ranch boys beat Granada Hills by 22 strokes at the Harding Golf Course at Griffith Park. J.J. Holen shot a 3-under 69 to lead West Ranch, 376-398, over Granada Hills. Clayton Thatch added a 1-over 73 for West Ranch.

In high school tennis, the Valencia boys lost to Santa Monica, 12-6.

The opening day of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament had its share of upsets, close calls and overtimes. The biggest upset of the day came when the University of Ohio, the No. 14 seed in the Midwest Region, ousted Georgetown, 97-83, in the first round of the tournament. In another surprising upset, Murray State, the No. 13 seed in the West Region, beat Vanderbilt, 66-65.

Three games went into overtime and one went into double overtime. Three games were decided by one point.

Old Dominion pulled off a stunner, 61-60, over sixth-seeded Notre Dame in the South Region. Wake Forest outlasted Texas, 81-80, in overtime in the East Region.

Washington, the champions of the Pac-10 tournament, beat sixth-seeded Marquette, 80-78, in the East Region.

The first round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament continues today.

Manny Ramirez hit his first home run of spring training and played a serviceable left field in the Dodgers 7-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. Ramirez hit his home run in the first inning and Chad Billingsley pitched into the fifth inning striking out four and giving up only one run.

The Dodgers will play the San Diego Padres today in spring training.

In hockey, the Kings lost to the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-0. Tomas Kopecky scored two third-period goals for the Blackhawks. Next up for the Kings are the New York Islanders on Saturday.
