COC Ice Hockey Team Wins ACHA National Championship

khts_sportsThe College of the Canyons ice hockey team beat Hope College, 5-3, to win its first ever American Collegiate Hockey Association national championship.

COC won the Division III championship with wins over the California University of Pennsylvania in the semifinals and Saginaw Valley State, the 2010 Division III champs, in the quarterfinals.

Brian Voogt scored two goals in the championship game against Hope. COC goaltender Michael McGrath earned tournament MVP.

The Valencia baseball team lost to Chatsworth, 8-5, in the championship game of the Easton Southern California Showdown.

The Hart baseball team beat Chaminade, 4-2, in the consolation championship game of the Easton Southern California Showdown. Hart starter Garrett Gooding struck out 10 in six innings for the win.

The West Ranch baseball team shut out Agoura, 1-0. Aaron Watkins scored the game’s only run on a wild pitch.

The Golden Valley baseball team beat Hueneme, 13-0, behind a four-RBI day from Jonah Sabedra. He was 4-for-4 with a double. Tanner Swier was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

The Highland softball team beat West Ranch and Hart to capture the Hart tournament at Central Park over the weekend.

Highland beat West Ranch, the 2010 Hart tournament champions, 2-1, in the semifinals. Highland starter Aryn Feickert struck out 11 and gave up only two hits in the game.

Feickert outdid herself in the championship game against Hart, winning 2-0 and throwing a five-hit shutout. She struck out 10 to secure the first Hart softball tournament championship in school history.

The Valencia softball team beat Santa Margarita, 9-0 in five innings, in the championship game of the Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz.

Freshman Maddy Jelenicki homered and earned tournament MVP honors. She hit five home runs in the tournament. Teammate Karlie Habitz hit a grand slam and starter Carly Mortensen tossed a two-hitter against Santa Margarita.

Valencia beat El Modina, 2-1, in the semifinals of the tournament. Jelenicki was 3-for-3 with a home run against El Modina.

The Valencia boys tennis team won the Southern California Tennis Association First Serve High School Team Tournament, 4-1, over Buckley.

The Master’s College baseball team was swept by Fresno Pacific in a doubleheader. Fresno Pacific won the first game, 8-2, and the second game, 5-1.

Ben Ives was 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run in the first game for The Master’s College.

Joe Riddle was 2-for-3 and hit a solo home in the second inning of the second game for The Master’s College.

Hayley Parkinson and Holly Kopp became the first women runners from The Master’s College to qualify for the NAIA national track meet.

Parkinson, a freshman and a graduate of Canyon High School, and Kopp, also a freshman, qualified in the 5,000 meters.

Parkinson is ranked third and Kopp is fourth in the NAIA in the 5,000 meters.

The Dodgers lost two games to the two teams from Chicago in spring training in Arizona. The split squad team lost to the Cubs, 4-3, and the White Sox, 6-1.

Rafael Furcal was 2-for-3 and drove in a run against the Cubs. Justin Sellers drove in the only run for the Dodgers with a double in the seventh inning against the White Sox.

The Lakers are back home for a game against Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic at Staples Center tonight. The Lakers are coming off a 96-91 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.

The Kings beat the Dallas Stars, 3-2, on a goal by Michal Handzus in the third period.

Drew Doughty and Dustin Penner also scored for the Kings.

Next up for the Kings are the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night.
