The College of the Canyons men’s golf team won the Southern Regional championship by 12 strokes at the Glendora Country Club.
Riley Hayfield led COC with a two-round score of 142. He shot 71 on both days of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern Regional.
COC shot 722 as a team and was 2-over par. The College of the Desert was second at 734.
Aaron West shot a 2-under 70 on the second day of the tournament for COC. He was 1-under par at 143 for the two-day event.
COC and College of the Desert earned spots in the state championship tournament at the Santa Maria Country Club next week.
In high school golf, two teams from the Foothill League finished in the top 10 at the CIF Southern Section Northern Team Regional at Soule Park in Ojai, but none of the teams advanced to the next round of the playoffs.
Saugus finished in a tie for fifth place at Soule Park. Valencia was seventh and West Ranch was 11th. The top-three teams in the Northern Regional advance to the Southern Section final.
Zack Leonard and Connor Morris from Saugus led the teams from the Foothill League. Each shot 2-over 74s. Valencia had five golfers shoot in the 70s. Jonathan Chang led the Vikings with a 3-over 75.
In high school tennis, the Valencia boys have the No. 4 seed in the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.
West Ranch, Saugus and Hart also earned playoff bids. Hart is in action today against Glendale in a wild-card match.
Valencia, West Ranch and Saugus begin playoffs on Wednesday.
In soccer, the Santa Clarita Storm lost to the San Diego Flash, 3-0. It was the first loss of the season for the Storm.
The next game for the Storm is against the Sonoma County Sol.
In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley finished fourth in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Stockton 99 Speedway over the weekend.
Dylan Kwasniewsi, his 16-year-old teammate at Gene Price Motorsports, won the race and took over the lead in the West Series standings.
In the NBA, the Clippers beat the Memphis Grizzlies, 101-97 in overtime, in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
The Clippers are up 3-1 and can knock the Grizzlies out of the playoffs on Wednesday.
