COC Men’s Soccer Team Advances To Semifinals Of Southern California Regional Playoffs

khts_sportsThe College of the Canyons men’s soccer team is in the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional after a 3-1 win over Santa Ana College.

The COC men scored three goals in the final seven minutes of the game to upset No. 2 Santa Ana College. COC’s Jose Reyes tied the game, 1-1, with a goal in the 83rd minute.

Four minutes later, Saugus High grad Manny Padron gave COC a 2-1 lead on a goal off a corner kick.

Andre Bueno capped the scoring spree with a goal in the 88th minute to give COC a 3-1 lead.

COC moves on to the semifinals of the Southern California Regional which begins on Friday at College of the Canyons. The COC men will play Fresno City College in one semifinal game. Mt. San Antonio College plays West Valley College in the other semifinal.

The championship game of the Southern California Regional is on Saturday at COC.

The Master’s College women’s soccer team begins play in the NAIA national tournament in Georgia today.

The Master’s College women will face California Baptist in the first round of the NAIA tournament.

Emily Bruton, a forward for The Master’s College, earned a spot on the ESPN Academic All-American Team. Bruton, the Golden State Athletic Conference player of the year, has a 3.91 grade point average in kinesiology and physical education.

In college basketball, the College of the Canyons women knocked off a pair of No. 1 teams in the Ventura College Kiwanis Tournament over the weekend.

The COC women beat Ventura College, the preseason No. 1 team in the state, in the championship game of the tournament, 84-77 in overtime.

Earlier in the tournament, COC beat Mt. San Antonio College, the current No. 1 team in the state, 75-67.

COC guard Dominique Turner scored 21 points against Ventura and earned tournament MVP honors. Forward Jazzmyn Davis scored 19 against Ventura and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

The Master’s College men lost to Southwestern Arizona, 81-65. Anthony Wells was the only player to score in double figures for The Master’s College. He scored 14.

The team shot 36 percent from the field. Ronnie Dodd had eight points and 11 rebounds.

The Master’s College men are back in action tonight against Hope International.

The Master’s College women take their undefeated 3-0 record to Hope International for a game tonight.

The Master’s College women are coming off a 103-100 win over San Diego Christian last week. Erica Inge poured in a game-high 31 points for The Master’s College in that one.

The Kings lost to the Anaheim Ducks, 2-0, and have lost seven of their past eight games.

Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller made 27 saves in the shutout. Cam Fowler and Jason Blake each scored goals for the Ducks.

The Kings have lost four games in a row. The Ducks have won two in a row after snapping a six-game losing streak over the weekend.

Next up for the Kings are the Florida Panthers on Thursday night at Staples Center.
