COC Men’s Soccer Team Loses Season Opener

The College of the Canyons men’s soccer team lost its season opener, 3-1, to El Camino-Compton Center.

Tony Barron scored the lone goal for the Cougars in the first half to tie the score, 1-1.

El Camino scored two goals in the second half to win the game.

In cross country, Istevan De La Rosa won the seventh and final race in the College of the Canyons series. He completed the course in 14 minutes, 52.6 seconds.

David Luna was second in 15 minutes, 45.2 seconds. Jarrick Wenslow was third in 15 minutes, 51.3 seconds.

Samantha Ortega-Hutana was the highest finishing woman in the race. She completed the course in 17 minutes, 27.4 seconds.

In baseball, the Dodgers lost to the Chicago Cubs, 3-2. Cubs starter Travis Wood outpitched Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw. Wood gave up one run on six hits in seven innings. Kershaw was pulled in the sixth inning after giving up two runs on seven hits.

The Dodgers have lost three of their past four games. But they still lead the National League West standings by 8 ½ games over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Dodgers and the Cubs wrap up their series today at Dodger Stadium. Ricky Nolasco starts for the Dodgers against Edwin Jackson for the Cubs.

First pitch is at 12:10 this afternoon.
